What Is Magic xpa for IBM i? (Magic xpa 3.x)

As an integrated software package that enables TCP/IP communication access to OS/400® functions and DB2/400™ data files,Magic xpa for IBM i lets you deploy Magic xpa applications on a PC workstation that can be deployed in a distributed IBM i environment.

Although a Magic xpa application can only be created in a Windows environment, it can be deployed on a number of non-Windows operating systems.

You can also partition a Magic xpa application and run its components on different systems. For example, one application component can run on a Windows workstation as the client, while another application component can run on IBM i as the server.

Magic xpa for IBM i provides you with a special gateway that transfers requests from a workstation to an IBM i server, and transfers request results from the IBM i server back to the workstation. The workstation needs this gateway to:

  • Access the database on the IBM i server

  • Run OS commands on the IBM i server

  • Call IBM i programs (CLP, RPG/RPGLE, Cobol/400, C) and OS APIs, including sending of Input/Output parameters

  • Cal lMagic xpa programs or applications on the IBM i server
