Using the MakeKey Utility (Magic xpa 3.x)

The MakeKey utility takes you through a series of information input needed for creating your new license entry.

The following information provides the procedure and clarifies the input this utility requires:

  1. Run the Makekey.exe utility.

  2. If the folder in which you are running already has a license.dat file, this utility will prompt you to enter a new output file name:
    "license.dat exists, please enter output filename:"
    If a license.dat file does not exist, the utility will automatically choose it as your output file.

  3. To create the SERVER and DAEMON header of the license file you can either specify your own header details or extract it from an existing license file:
    "Do you want to use an existing file for SERVER and DAEMON lines [y/n] ?" Yes, No

  4. If you choose to use an existing file for the header you will be asked if you want to use the existing license.dat file:
    "Do you want to use C:\FlexLM\license.dat ? [y/n]:" Yes, No

  5. If you choose not to use the default file for the header you will be asked to enter the name of the source file yourself:
    "What file do you want to use?"
    Enter a valid file name with a license file header and proceed to enter the features.

  6. If you choose not to use an existing file for the header, you will need to provide the header information of the servers names and hostid. The servers' information entry procedure is cyclic. You can end this procedure by entering a blank host name after the last server details.

  7. "Enter hostname:"
    Here you should enter the name of the host computer.
    Enter blank value to end the servers' entry procedure.

  8. "Enter the hostid:"
    Here you should enter the physical id of the host computer. To use any physical computer, enter the value "any".

  9. "Use IPX as transport protocol? [y/n]:" Yes, No
    Specify if you want your license transport protocol to be of IPX.

  10. "Enter the IPX socket number [1234]:"
    Enter the value of the IPX socket number. The default IPX socket is 1234.

  11. "Enter the IPX node number [000000000001]:"
    Enter the value of the IPX node number. The default IPX node number is 000000000001.

  12. "Enter the IPX network number [00000000]:"
    Enter the value of the IPX network number, The default IPX network number 00000000.

  13. "Use TCP/IP as transport protocol? [y/n]:" Yes, No
    Specify if you want your license transport protocol to be of TCP/IP.

  14. "Enter the TCP/IP port number [7412]:"
    Enter the TCP/IP port number. The default port number is 7412.

  15. You now can enter details for another server.

  16. "Enter DAEMON "MAGIC" path:"
    Enter the patch of the LMG.exe daemon.

  17. Now that the header information is completed you need to enter the information for the feature licenses you want to create. The feature entry is a cyclic procedure that allows you to enter numerous features. You can end this procedure by entering a blank Feature name after the last feature has been entered.

  18. "Feature name:"
    Enter a short descriptive name for the feature you want to create.

  19. "FEATURE/INCREMENT/UPGRADE line? [f/i/u, default: f]:"
    Specify the default entry for FEATURE.

  20. "Version of [Feature name][default 1.0]:"
    Specify the version of your feature license. The default is 1.0.

  21. "Number of licenses [default: 4]:"
    Specify the number of licenses this feature allows. The default number of licenses is 4.

  22. "Number of OVERDRAFT licenses [default: 0]:"
    Specify the number of overdraft allowed by this feature. The default overdraft of licenses is 0.
    The overdraft licenses are the extra user count you allow on top of the given licenses.

  23. "Duplicate grouping parameter [NONE, SITE, [UHDV], default: not specified]:"
    Press Enter to use the default 'Not specified option.

  24. "Intellectual Property Notice [default: ""]:"
    Here you can specify an additional remark for your license. This remark will be placed in the license created as the value of a property called NOTICE.

  25. "Expiration date [dd-mmm-yyyy, default: 1-jul-97]:"
    Enter the expiration date for your license. If no expiration date is desired, enter the date 1-jan-0.
    If you enter an expiration date that already passed, you will be prompted with a confirmation line:
    " If you want to use 1jul-97, type "y":"

  26. "Start date [dd-mmm-yyyy, default: 1-jan-95]:"
    Specify the date from which this license is active. The default date is 1January 1995.

  27. "Your vendor-defined string:"
    Specify the type of license you want to use.
    For creating a license that will work through the license server enter the string "P=S" (without the quotation marks).
    For creating a license that will NOT work through the license server enter the string "P=N" (without the quotation marks).

  28. "Host id (if locking to a single host):"
    Enter the value 'any'.

  29. If you want to create an additional feature, enter the next feature name.

  30. Now that the MakeKey is completed you can use this license file or incorporate the created feature for your application in your existing license file.
